TIP #1 CATCHING BAIT
When throwing
a cast net, especially in clear waters try the following bait chum
formula:
In a five gallon bucket dissolve 1 cup of powered milk
in a gallon of water, and
1 or 2 cups of Menhaden Milk. To this mixture add dry tropical fish
food, or oatmeal and stir.
Throw this mixture out in the water. (A cheap plastic
baseball bat cutoff at a forty five degree angle three forth of
the way up the barrel makes a great “chum slinger”.) The baitfish
are attracted to the scent
and “fish food”, the milk clouds the water so they don’t see the
net coming.
When using sabiki rigs, try soaking your rigs in menhaden
oil or Menhaden Milk. We unwrap the rig leaving it on the card.
Take the card and put in a sealing type sandwich bag with a little
“milk or oil added to the bag and let them soak. When bait is hard
to get or in competitive situations (weekends, tournaments) we add
a small chum pot in place of the weight.
An old prescription (large) vial with
holes drilled in the side and one in the top or a tea infuser ball
works great. Place your weight in the vessel along with sponge,
or cotton and add Menhaden Milk or menhaden oil. You could also
use ground chum if you want.
Now while jigging for bait you have a chum pot working
for you.
